Amsterdam is one of Europe's most charming and livable cities — and a wonderful destination for a short break or longer holiday. The canal ring (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is unlike any urban landscape in the world: 165 canals, 1,500 bridges, and rows of leaning 17th-century merchant houses reflected in the water.
For art lovers, Amsterdam is unmatched: the Rijksmuseum (Dutch Golden Age masterpieces including Rembrandt's Night Watch), the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk for modern art, and the Moco Museum for contemporary and street art are all within walking distance.
Day trips:
Day trips: The Keukenhof flower garden (open March through May — world's largest flower garden, 7 million tulips) is a 45-minute drive. The cheese markets of Gouda and Edam, and the windmill village of Zaanse Schans, are perfect half-day excursions.
Getting around:
Getting around: Amsterdam is extremely walkable and cycleable. Rent a bike at Centraal Station and you'll cover the city like a local. The GVB tram network covers everything the bike doesn't.
